What screen time does to children’s brains is more complicated than it seems pt1

Children these days are exposed to a lot of new tech, including phones, tablets, and gaming consoles. These can be extremely addictive, and screen time is a huge issue with young children. The amount of time could affect mental health, cause sleep deprivation and distract students from dong work, but it could be more complicated than this.

Zoe Kleinman, the technology editor on BBC news says that she gave her younger child a tablet, and got worried about the fact that she didn’t know how much time they had spent on it, and what they were looking at. She went to take it off her child, and he caused a full-blown tantrum. The effect the screens have on children is a huge issue as it can cause them to refuse to let it go and do anything else. She also often hears he older children teasing eachother about ‘touching grass’ – to get off tech and go outside.

Screen time has become synonymous with bad news, such as mental health issues and sleep deprivation, and Baroness Susan Greenfield went as far as to say that internet use and computer games can harm the adolescent brain!

Plenty of people are taking screen time seriously nowadays, and how it can affect how young kids react to certain things, how they speak and how they act, what is the scientific proof that there are many problems?

Well actually, there isn’t! Scientists have studied thousands of brains from young children and their screen time doesn’t seem to affect how their brain works or how it can affect their thinking. Many people argue that the blue light can affect their sleep, but studies also prove that ‘no screens an hour befroe bed’ doesn’t affect how quickly one can sleep that much.

pt two talks about the difference between uplifting screen tiem and doomscrolling, and waht are some of the pros and cons of screen time.
